WHAT IS FREELANCE FOOD WRITING
If you have good intentions and have words, writing food can be a way to think about it. Not only is doing research on food writing one of the fun activities in freelance writing, but you will never run out of dietary recommendations and food that may be free - even though you may not need well-fitting pants.
To be an effective freelance food writer, you will need to know how to define good food. The key to the definition, at least in the traditional texts, is to make a focused, concrete comparison. The basic rule of food writing is to make your reader wish he or she had any delicious food to write about, to make the student grow his or her own food. And there is a strange quirk in the human mind: whenever we think of an object or a work, we make parts of our brain function whenever we interact with that object or perform that function. In other words: when we think of throwing a baseball, the nerves in our arms tremble. Or, when we think of eating a thick steak, our stomach swells and our mouth gets wet. When you write about food, you want to activate those same parts of the brain to make your reader feel that you are participating in the knowledge of food. Words like “nice,” “delicious,” or, worst of all, “very good,” will have little effect on your student's feelings. Only food-related words - or words and pictures with strong emotional meanings - will make your readers' mouths water.
Once you have written your essays, where to market your food writing? If you live in a big city, you can write a local newspaper or other paper (i.e. LA Weekly, Austin Chronicle, etc.). Millions of people read these pages daily or weekly, and a good portion of those millions read the food section. When anyone in the big city needs to book a restaurant for a day, a business dinner, a party, or other social engagement, they head to the food section of the local newspaper to get hot new updates for the restaurant. Stay tuned for more restaurant openings and closures in your city. New restaurants can be your “bread and butter”. Local newspapers and online city guides are always looking to print new restaurant reviews.
If you have a hangout of your favorite place that most people don't know about, write an article in it. Submit your article and the relevant questionnaire to the local newspaper. You can be the first to write about this place, throwing the necessary business in their way. Eventually, he collects a decent salary from the newspaper, as well as a published article, byline, and hopes that it will work more and be passed on to others.
One way is to write magazines dedicated to food, food, city life, traditional lifestyles, or tourist markets. If you plan to write a magazine, your choice to write about it becomes very wide. You can write how to make articles, discussion pieces, cooking reviews, and more. If you plan to write tourist guides, your best bet is to write restaurant reviews. Visitors may not be aware of any well-known restaurants or local diners. The tour guides provide insight and direction of the hot and off-hot environment. If you don’t live in a big city, it’s very hard to be a food writer. Consider selling your articles in regional magazines. The Department of Transportation in several U.S. states regularly publishes a monthly magazine on regional issues. The editors of these magazines often consider restaurant reviews to be a source of public interest, or a way to increase overseas tourism to non-traditional destinations.
Additionally, you can try writing a sample copy of cookbooks, press releases for food suppliers, or food company ads. Companies and publishers of books hire good food writers to help sell anything from new types of pasta sauce to gourmet steak dishes. Even the nearest supermarket may be willing to pay for a copy of the weekly flyers.
Unfortunately for rural species, writing full food is often an urban game. With urban varieties, food is one of the products that will never cease to be popular, especially when offered as part of a great dining experience. So writing food means job security, and more importantly: it's just fun writing. So get to it!
